A Phoenix Rises For The Nashes
Marshall Fire Rebuild.
On the morning of December 30th, 2021 Todd and Carrie Nash were at home doing their usual morning routine - drinking coffee and doing some work stuff in the downstairs level of their home in Spanish Hills. It was a very windy day, Carrie recalls. There were trash cans flying around the yard due to extreme gusts of wind. The Nash’s were three years into living in the home that they completely rebuilt from a mid-seventies style house.
The home was perched on a small mesa in the Spanish Hills area of Boulder County. They loved the home and the floorplan they had created. On this day, there were concerns. The wind speeds were getting pretty wild and Carrie walked up to the main level - which offers sweeping views of the flatirons and Arapahoe peaks area - to check on things. It was then she noticed a wind-driven plume of orange smoke not far away across Highway 36.
Todd recalls the smoke was on the other side of Highway 36 which is not too far from the house. Carrie immediately started to pack a bag and Todd questioned her reason for doing this. However once the smoke began to infiltrate the house they realized it was time to get out. They grabbed some clothes and the dog and jumped in their respective cars. Carrie recalls that the the garage door wouldn't close as the power had gone out. There was no time to worry about that, so she left it open and drove out into the smoke.
At this stage flames and smoke were rapidly encroaching, whipping across the grassland. It was probably a bit too late, recalls Todd… By the time they left the house there was almost zero visibility on the road down out of the neighborhood and they were basically driving through flames to get to South Boulder Road. The heat was so intense as Todd recalls, that the carpeting on the floorboards of his vehicle melted from driving through the flames.
It was a two hour ordeal to get from the house to their son's house and safety due to traffic congestion from people fleeing the neighborhood in their cars.
The Nashes house featured an indoor sprinkler system and a lot of stone on the outside, so Carrie and Todd hoped that the house might survive this fire. However, that evening their oldest son, Connor, had recorded the television footage of the fire and helicopter shots confirmed that their house no longer existed. Three years of bliss went up in flames…
The Nash’s didn’t wait long before figuring out the next steps. The obstacles were great however with so many houses burned in the area. The insurance companies were very tricky to work with. Fighting a year-long battle to get the insurance coverage was like a fulltime job, they recall. An associate of Rosewood put them in touch with our team and the decision was made to rebuild - with a similar floor plan but even more modernized exterior designed by architect David Hueter of Fort Collins. The main level of the house was the most important to get figured out as it offers expansive views of the Front Range.
The project lasted around 18 months and a new ‘Phoenix’ rose from the ashes. “Rosewood offered a consistent commitment to us and that was key, " says Carrie. Their experience was amazing and this is what we needed to get us through the project. They have a great attitude and work ethic.”
It helped that Carrie is a mortgage broker for Highlands Residential Mortgage with 30 plus years of experience.
